The study of LOTE aims to develop your interpersonal skills in the target language and to further develop understandings of other cultures. Having the skills in another language develops students’ abilities to problem solve, identify with others and develop keen communication skills.

At Dalby State High School, Japanese is studied in year 7 and 8.  Students will engage in a variety of themes that develop connections with both the culture and language of Japan.  Assessment is of the four macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.  A variety of tools are employed to assess these skills.

It is recommended that Japanese be undertaken as a continuous programme, since each semester builds on skills from previous semesters. Those contemplating the study of Japanese in the senior phase should seriously consider continuous study during Years 8 and 9 since it will provide a strong foundation for further study.

The offering of Japanese from year 9 onwards is currently through external study via Distance Education. Other languages are also available for study via this method.

Parents seeking student exemption form the mandatory study of Japanese are required to complete the application form which is available from the school office or available on the Education Queensland website. Students exempt from Japanese will undertake a literacy and numeracy course.
