Indigenous Education

Titans 4 Tomorrow program visit in 2014

At Dalby State High School we are committed to providing Education that is equitable for all members of our school community. We have several Indigenous Education programs and endeavour to embed Indigenous perspectives in our everyday classroom practices.

At our school, we have a CEC (Community Education Counsellor). This role within the school is to provide counselling and support services to ensure that the best possible assistance services are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This position also helps to provide cross cultural awareness training to the broader school community. Community Education Counsellors are present in schools to encourage cultural awareness and educational equality.

What does a CEC do?

A Community Education Counsellor is part of the Student Support team at the school and provides educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. This may include individual and group support to students in the areas of personal, academic and social skills and behaviour management. They participate in the development of programs that are likely to enhance the involvement in education of these students and their families. They also develop and undertake support service programs, maintain links with out of school sources of information to assist in the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and provide information to the school community about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural perspectives. A large part of this positon is developing productive partnerships between members of the school community.

At Dalby State High School, the CEC often assists with:

  • Scholarship application and administration
  • Mentoring programs, e.g. DARE, Safe Sista
  • Cultural camp/trip information and organisation
  • Liaising between teachers, parents, students, administration, and community stakeholders e.g. DISCO, Goondir Health.
  • Timetable assistance.
