Many parents may not be familiar with my role, as Youth Health nurses are only based in state high schools. The role of a Youth Health nurse involves facilitating a variety of initiatives to promote positive health and well-being at Dalby SHS. Youth Health nurse is an employee of Queensland Health and service Dalby SHS. They are a Registered Emergency and Sexual Health trained Nurse, with the service available to the students, parents, and staff of the school.
Within the role as Youth Health Nurse, there are some services they do NOT provide such as:
- treatment including medications, injections, first aid
- physical examinations
- ongoing counselling for psychological concerns
What do they do? How can they help you?
The service provides confidential support, guidance and advice, and generally just someone to talk to for students, their parents or staff members within the school.
You can make an appointment to see the Youth Health nurse in private to talk about issues which may be worrying you such as:
- mental health concern s;
- friendship issues; bullying;
- family breakdown;
- sexual health concerns;
- eating & nutrition issues;
- substance use;
- puberty & growing up;
- general health concerns or just simply to assist you to get in touch with the right external community service.
Confidentiality is vitally important for young people seeking health information and advice.
The SBYHN is a 'neutral person' within the school system, and as an employee of Queensland Health, adheres to a strict confidentiality policy which is discussed at the start of each appointment. The SBYHN does not require parental consent to offer a service to a young person.
What other things does the School Youth Health Nurse do?
- facilitates health promotion activities in a school setting,
- facilitate the development of partnerships with relevant government and non-government agencies for health support and referral
- support the development of a healthy school environment and ethos.

SBYHN office is located under D block next to the NAS room.
Do you need a referral?
No referral is required.

Tania our Youth Health nurse is available every Wednesday and Thursday, alternate Fridays.
