Extracurricular activities offered to students from our school farm at the Bunya Campus are;
Cattle show team
Each year, the Cattle Show team participates in a variety of shows from local to state level. With hard work, commitment and persistence students will not only learn about the aspects of preparing cattle for showing, they will have the opportunity to build confidence within a thriving industry. Students also learn about all features of cattle from different breeds to breeding, feedlot handling including nutrition, public speaking and handling.
Dalby State High School has been very competitive in the showing of our home grown animals with many trophies, ribbons and Grand Champion accolades.
Sheep show team
Dalby State High School started a White Suffolk stud in 2019. Students in the Sheep Show Team take the sheep from the stud to various shows in the region, as well as the Ekka in August. Even in that short time we have had successes with our sheep and hope to continue to build on this success in the years to come.
Members of the team learn to prepare our sheep for the show by trimming their fleece and halter training them. Students also learn basic sheep husbandry skills. They then use their skills to show the sheep and participate in sheep handling competitons. They also learn how to judge sheep which allows them to have a go at Junior Judging competitions at the shows. These competitions provide opportunities for the students to practice public speaking and to build teamwork skills.
'Learn to ride' horse riding lessons
DSHS students have access to our campus horses by the way of group and individual arena lessons. As well as learning to ride, students learn about horse management, feeding, rugging and general saddlery.
Agricultural Ekka display team
Each year, Dalby State High School students compete at the Ekka in Brisbane constructing their Youth in Agriculture display. Months of hard work comes together to produce the annual themes which highlight local agricultural industry, energy production and transport. Students also participate in fruit, vegetable and grain judging competitions. The students hard work and preparation is regularly rewarded with various awards each year.
Positions for these activities are limited and a selection criteria must be undertaken. These activities also attract some extra costs to cover show nominations, uniforms and excursions and lesson fees (horses).
